It’s 4:50 on a Thursday. You’re nine tabs deep into a new chat, typing the same paragraph you typed on Tuesday: "Remember, we use Oxford commas, we never say utilize, and the CTA button is always #0F9D58." Copy. Paste. Into the next chat, and the one after that.

The AI agent isn’t bad at its job. Every conversation just starts from zero. You’re not managing a colleague who remembers last week’s brief — you’re managing amnesia. A very capable amnesia, but amnesia all the same.

What a "skill" actually is

Strip away the branding and a skill is the simplest idea available: a folder with a text file named SKILL.md. It contains two key building blocks:

  • Metadata header: Name (max 64 chars) + trigger description (max 200 chars).
  • Markdown instructions: Clear guidelines and constraints in plain language.

The 200-character description does heavy lifting. It’s what Claude reads mid-conversation to decide whether your skill is relevant. Write it vague ("helps with marketing") and Claude ignores it. Write it specific ("audits marketing copy for cognitive biases"), and it fires exactly when needed.

How to add a skill to Claude

  1. Enable Code Execution: Go to Settings > Capabilities and enable Code execution and file creation.
  2. Create SKILL.md: Write the metadata & instructions, then place any reference files in the folder.
  3. Zip the Folder: Ensure the folder sits directly at the root of the ZIP archive.
  4. Upload to Claude: Go to Customize > Skills > + Create skill > Upload a skill and select your ZIP.
